Perhaps the most novel example of military music was that of the Trains of Artillery, and as far as the writer can ascertain, was peculiar to the English service. The artillery employed kettledrums similar to those of the cavalry, but instead of being carried on horseback, on either side of the drummer's saddle, they were mounted on a grand chariot, finely ornamented, and drawn by six white horses. They appear in the field of battle for the first time during the Irish Rebellion of 1689, and the custom lasted until 1759, when the artillery were divided into independent brigades. There is an interesting order issued during the Flanders Campaign, 1747, which directs the kettledrummer of the artillery "to mount the kettledrum carriage every night half-an-hour before the sunset, and beat until gun-firing."1
